Description: The Humpback is sufficiently different from other whales in form and behavior to merit its own genus, Megaptera. This name means 'big wing' and clearly refers to its enormous flippers, the largest of any whale. The term Humpback clearly refers to its habit of raising and bending its back in preparation for a dive, accentuating the pronounced hump in front of the dorsal fin. The largest recorded humpback was a female, 88 feet long. A mature humpback may weigh up to a ton a foot, or nearly 50 ton. Calves range in size form 10 to 16 feet, and average 1.5 tons at birth.
